October 5, 2004 - The Great Wide Eight Debate!

Last year the deer on the left was a 23" wide 8pt that various people aged to be 3 1/2 years old. The deer on the right was seen this year in relatively the same place as the deer on the left and has a VERY wide 10pt frame with a kicker and a non-symmetry point between the G2 and G3 on his right side. You can see the similarities in brow tine position and distance between G1 and G2 on the beam. Also, in profile the two deer's frames look very similar.

There was a similar deer in the same area last year that would be 6 or 7 years old this year. This deer had many characteristics of the deer on the right. He was semi-wide (approximately 24") and had a non-symmetry point in the same place. However the deer's frames just don't mesh quite right. The brow tines are in different places on the beam and are different shapes, the antlers are a different color, and the beams come off the head differently.

The Debate:

Which deer is it? Is it the 3 1/2 year old 8 pointer or the big 9 with a non-symmetry point from last year?

If it's the 8 then we have a heck of a 4 1/2 year old on our hands.

If it's the big 9 then he needs to be harvested.

What do you think?
