It only took 24 days of hunting for Mark Barrett to collect this ~230 inch buck this past Tuesday evening. After being seen 3 times before the MLD season, the deer went into hiding. Only recently had glimpses of him been reported just before dark. 40 total sits (he counted) was the right number for Dad to get his biggest buck ever. The score really doesn't reflect how big this deer is. The bases are 6+. He has over 27 inch beams, is over 30 inches wide outside and at one point past his G-3 his beam is 2 inches ACROSS. I think he put out more total antler than my deer, which we will check with water displacement.

If you have been viewing the website you already know the quality and success Mark and Marko Barrett have produced in their wildlife management . This year alone they have harvested two bucks scoring 275 7/8 and 229 5/8. What you probably don’t know are some of the things they do so the youth of today will be better prepared to carry on conservation and management of deer herds and wildlife for future generations to enjoy as we know it today. One of their programs has been to have a list in the local schools for boys and girls to sign up for doe hunts. Texas Parks and Wildlife Biologists supervise each youth. They furnish some of the rifles and teach them gun safety. The ranch furnishes the doe hunt, lunch and dinner, and an education on cleaning of the game so no meat is wasted. The hunt includes both boys and girls, all furnished at no cost. Management bucks are harvested by family or friends, sons or grandsons. The number of doe and buck to be harvested is decided by Mark and Marko after a helicopter game survey. This is done to keep the buck doe Ratio in proper balance. This year they have an added program of providing hunts for wounded veterans returning from Iraq, on another ranch. I have known the Barretts for more than twenty years. They always keep a low profile and do nothing for publicity. Marko recently agreed to let me publish this on the website only after I convinced him this may encourage other ranchers, sportsmen and sportswomen to participate in similar projects for our youth. I was inspired to write this after reviewing videos of my two grandsons harvesting their first bucks guided by Mark Barrett. I feel very fortunate to be one of their lucky friends. With people like the Barretts the preservation of the Game that God has provided us has a great future.
